Technical handbook + Anthology of scores (after such maestros
as Joaquin ROCA, Ramon MONTOYA, Paco de LUCENA, Amalio CUENCA...)
+ audiocassette or compact disc: a teaching set to discover, understand and play
Flamenco, the Andalusian Gypsies' music...
This text-book develops all the theoretical aspects
needed to understand and play Flamenco music. It explains
its specific modes, harmony and rhythms in a terse but
efficient manner, including numerous practical tables:
modes and scales; genera (toques) classified
according to their key; 10 cadence tables, one per key,
where chords are ranged according to their function in
the harmony; 9 rhythmic families with their specific
patterns.
A second part is devoted to the technique of Flamenco
Guitar: it names all its specific effects, describes how
to play them and lists the notations thought out for them
by the author. Symbolic, these notations, which are the
ones used in the Anthology (2), give to the musical text
a light airy aspect facilitating easy and pleasant
reading.
(2) GUITARE FLAMENCO(Anthology):----
a 180-page treatise, of which 160 pages of scores
Apart from an abstract in French of the above-mentioned
text-book, this treatise essentially consists in a survey
of the traditional Flamenco thematic, through twenty
widely developed arrangements written as concert or
recording rhapsodies. For each toque, the author
has collected and compiled the typical falsetas,
rhythmical refrains and coplas, all of them
clearly delimited by double bars: the guitarist may, in
this way, either play the proposed scores integrally, as
he would perform classical compositions, or choose the
elements which please him the most and reorganize them
according to his own taste.
Rather than being a school of up-to-date Flamenco, well
defended already by other authors, this work revives the
traditional roots of this music and shows how it was
played before 1960.
Jean-Louis PASTEUR received his initiation mostly from
the Spanish maestro Joaquín ROCA (1896-1981), whose
knowledge in this field was encyclopaedic :
from his youth keen on the style bequeathed
by the legendary precursor Paco de LUCENA (1859-1898),
he later became a close friend to such outstanding tocaores as
Ramón MONTOYA (1880-1949), Amalio
CUENCA or Hernando VIÑES (1904-1993). It is the reason why the inquiring guitarist will
be glad to find here, not only toques regrettably
falling in disuse, but also antique falsetas and coplas
which the exclusively oral transmission has lost long
ago.
Titles of the pieces: Siguiriya, Caña, Soleares,
Alegría por enmedio,
Alegría "La Rosa", Bulería, Tientos Gitanos,
Tientos y Tanguillos de Cádiz, Zapateado, Fandango de
Huelva, Malagueña, Granadinas, Taranta, Petenera,
Guajira, Farruca, Sevillanas (8), Zambra Mora; Jota
aragonesa,
Canción de Cuna asturiana (the last two pieces,
non-Flamenco, are a bonus !).
(3) GUITARE FLAMENCO(Sonorous
illustration): a 40-minute
audiocassette (sold out) or compact disc
In this recording, Jean-Louis PASTEUR personally plays his
favourite pieces, as he would perform them in concert.
The listener hears exactly what is written in the
anthology, so that he can follow the scores and
eventually improve his own interpretation.
Titles played: Soleares, Taranta, Petenera, Zambra
Mora, Granadinas,
Fandango de Huelva, Farruca.
Pasteur's "Theory and Practice of Flamenco
Guitar" is the most complete analysis in English
of this style of music that I have ever seen. In a clear
and concise way, it provides an introduction for the
intermediate or advanced guitarist to understanding this
esoteric, exclusively oral tradition. The well-notated
scores in "Guitare Flamenco" provide authentic
material for the performer or ethnomusicologist.
(+1981). Lo original de la presente antología reside
precisamente en intentar traducir al pentagrama musical
la transmisión exclusivamente oral del flamenco. Las 17
primeras páginas están dedicadas a una iniciación
técnica: tonalidad, armonía y ritmo del flamenco. Esta
misma novedad puede encontrar vivas polémicas y
discutidas opiniones.
(1) / PASTEUR, Jean-Louis: THEORY AND PRACTICE OF
FLAMENCO GUITAR
Cuaderno de nociones teóricas y prácticas para
"tocaores" de guitarra. Va dirigido tanto a
guitarristas principiantes como a avanzados. Facilita el
aprendizaje de los neófitos mediante múltiples escalas,
acordes y ritmos.
y toques, cadencias, ritmos flamencos, técnica, etc.
flamenco accessible à n'importe quel guitariste
(2)+(3) / Jean-Louis PASTEUR / GUITARE FLAMENCO ET
CASSETTE
maître auprès duquel l'auteur a travaillé. Cet ouvrage
(1) / Jean-Louis PASTEUR / THEORY AND PRACTICE OF
FLAMENCO GUITAR
The author has made numerous rounds in France, Spain, Germany,
Italy,
Switzerland and the Netherlands to supply music shops.
